Ingenious and Fearless Companions
“Ingenious and Fearless Companions” was an exhibition commissioned by BOM (Birmingham Open Media) in 2016 by The High Altitude Bioprospecting team which features Institute of Unnecessary Research Department Heads Melissa Grant, Oliver De Peyer, Anna Dumitriu, Alex May, and Kira O’ Reilly, plus Paul Shepherd. The remains of the wrecked robot which fell to earth from a rocket when its parachute failed to open were autopsied in a unique performance led by Kira O’Reilly.
A video-mapped installation using footage of the HAB rocket launch using weather balloons by Alex May.
A “Stratospheric Communication Device” created by Anna Dumitriu in collaboration with Melissa Grant sent in to space to chemically communicate with the bacteria of the air was also exhibited in a specially created installation, and there was an attempt to communicate to the bacteria in the gallery using the bacterial communication hormone homoserine lactone.
The Institute of Unnecessary Research Meets The Egyptian BioArt Society
The Institute of Unnecessary Research and The Egyptian BioArt Club have collaborated in the form of a living artwork/exhibition and open lab around DIY microbiology practices, BioArt, the body and digital technologies bringing together a team of internationally renowned artists to the prestigious annual media arts festival ISEA 2014, which took place in the city of Dubai. The exhibition featured artworks by Heba El Aziz, Lucy McCabe, Alex May, and Anna Dumitriu.
